about 80% of the indie web lags my computer

I use an older computer. Not much older. Like... 2021, if I'm remembering correctly. I bought it used nearly a year and a half ago because it came with a lot of accessories I wanted, and at a great deal. But in the modern world, that may be considered kind of weaksauce. It's not like this laptop was considered the peak of its potential when it came out. In fact, I'd describe it as 'solid' back then.

Which means a lot less now. The title says it all, but I kind of want to actually talk about it. I might be a bit of a hater here, but please don't take it personally. This has happened to me so many times I just don't care anymore.

Oftentimes, I'll click on websites that interest me, as many might do. I might end up on a landing page. I might even have it load fairly quickly, making me think this will be similar to the actual site.

I will then get bombarded with at least ten widgets and images and gifs loading that kill my computer for a solid while until I get the tab to close.

My issue is not really one of accessibility, considering these websites aren't impacting my health or some such. Unless you count the health of my laptop, but that's a different matter entirely... but it is something I think about. Is everyone scrolling these sites on your gaming PCs? Is that what I gotta be doing? But I like my laptop, as dinky and weak as it is. It's kind of a shame it can't handle a lot of these sites. It can barely handle the one page I made myself dedicated to slapping stamps and images up to. It's mostly the gifs and widgets that cause this issue, though.

Oftentimes when I tweak my site, I feel the temptation to add similar elements, to make my page look 'flashier' or to 'give it an identity'. But I'm sure there's plenty of other people like me out there, scrolling on their shitty phones or laptops trying not to give their browser a heart attack. That's the main reason I've kept it (mostly) simple.

There's not really much of a conclusion to all this. I like making lightweight webpages because I think lag is annoying and find it difficult if not impossible to navigate websites with a high concentration of blinkies and funny games importated from the Funny Website Game Home for Lost Webpages. At least people are having fun, I suppose.
